Check out this great MSN video – The World’s Most Respected Companies of 2013.

As a small business owner, looking up to huge, international corporations as inspiration for growth and development is the ultimate ambitious attitude that we all need to have. I once heard that in order to be #1, you have to act and think like you are #2. Complacency is a potential pitfall for companies and brands. Just when you think and feel like no one is out to knock you down, think again!

Everyone is motivated at different levels of intensity and if your motivation has become complacent because you think, feel, hear, or have been reviewed as the best, do yourself a favor and stay grounded. Ask yourself everyday, HOW CAN I BE THE BEST AT WHAT I DO? WHAT DO I NEED TO IMPROVE ON?

Here is the list of the top five most respected companies of 2013:

1. Berkshire Hathaway – props to Warren Buffet
2. Disney
3. Apple
4. Google
5. Coca Cola

After three consecutive years, Apple fell from 1st place to 3rd place. Did they get complacent?

Barron’s Criteria for ranking companies are:

1. Strong management
2. Sound business strategy
3. Ethical business practices
4. Product innovation
5. Revenue growth; stock performance

Ask yourself, in your own way, how do you rank your company according to the criteria listed above?
